Is a SIMPLE IRA Right for Your Small Business?

How It Works, Contribution Limits, and Pros and Cons

A SIMPLE IRA (Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees) is a retirement savings option for small-business owners and their employees. It allows employees to contribute toward retirement while requiring employers to make contributions as well.

Here's how a SIMPLE IRA works, who is eligible, and the advantages and disadvantages business owners should consider.

What Is a SIMPLE IRA, and How Does It Work?

Short Answer: A SIMPLE IRA is a retirement plan that allows employees to contribute through salary reductions, while the employer also makes required contributions.

The employer generally chooses between matching employee contributions or making a 2% nonelective contribution for eligible employees. Each eligible employee has their own SIMPLE IRA account, and the plan is established through a written agreement. Contributions generally consist of employee elective contributions and employer contributions.

How Much Can You Contribute to a SIMPLE IRA Each Year?

Employees can generally contribute up to **$16,500 for 2025 and $17,000 for 2026**. Additional catch-up contributions are available for eligible participants age 50 or older. Certain smaller employers may qualify for higher contribution limits under special rules.

The employer generally provides either:

  • A matching contribution of up to 3% of compensation, or
  • A 2% nonelective contribution for eligible employees.

SECURE 2.0 also allows certain employers to make additional nonelective contributions, subject to applicable limits.

Who Is Eligible for a SIMPLE IRA?

SIMPLE IRAs are generally available to employers with 100 or fewer employees who meet the applicable compensation requirements.

Employees who earned at least $5,000 in compensation during any two prior years and are reasonably expected to earn at least $5,000 in the current year generally must be allowed to participate. Self-employed individuals can also use a SIMPLE IRA if they meet the plan requirements.

What Are the Advantages of a SIMPLE IRA?

A SIMPLE IRA offers several benefits for small-business owners and their employees:

  • Simpler administration  than many traditional qualified retirement plans.
  • There is generally no annual Form 5500 filing requirement.
  • Contributions are fully vested immediately.
  • Employees, including self-employed owners, can make salary-reduction contributions similar to a 401(k).
  • The employer also contributes to the plan, providing an additional retirement benefit.
  • Roth SIMPLE IRA contributions are now permitted under current law.

What Are the Disadvantages of a SIMPLE IRA?

There are also some limitations to consider:

  • Employee contribution limits are generally lower than those available through a traditional or Solo 401(k), which may be less attractive for higher-income individuals trying to maximize retirement savings.
  • Employers are generally required to make either matching contributions or 2% nonelective contributions for eligible employees.
  • Because employer contributions are required, the plan creates an ongoing cost once the business has eligible employees.

How Do You Choose the Right Retirement Plan for Your Business?

There is no single retirement plan that works best for every self-employed individual or business owner. The right choice depends on factors such as your income, business structure, number of employees, cash flow, and long-term retirement goals.

Because each option has different tax benefits, contribution limits, and employer requirements, choosing a retirement plan should be done with the help of a qualified tax professional who understands your business and your overall tax strategy.
